KS3 online work experience portal: The Alan Johnston Partnership is a leading independent civil and structural engineering consultancy, trusted in the construction industry for over forty years. Pioneering in BIM technology, AJP simplify design solutions and sustainability for an increasingly complex world.

As part of AJP’s CSR and ESG commitments, and as a way of publicising and promoting careers in civil and structural engineering, AJP came to us with an idea of developing an online work experience training course aimed, predominantly at KS3 pupils. The resulting Engine portal educates students about the ins-and-outs of being a civil engineer, and the kinds of roles and responsibilities required.

Engine is a subscriber model. One of the main challenges was to design and create a portal that was stimulating and fun to do, and that would engage teenagers sufficiently for them to finish the course. In addition, developing a portal that could have hundreds of subscribers meant that security was paramount and that any collected personal data was kept secure.

We began by devising the course. Focusing on seven key areas of civil engineering, we wrote modules that covered these focus points. Each module had an introduction, some technical information and vocab, a task, a multiple-choice quiz, and a summary reinforcing what the module was about. Each of these modules has opportunity for students to enter written answers to questions about what they have learned.
The modules are bookended with an introduction to what civil and structural engineering is and the skills required, and some self-reflection at the end with the option to download a completed workbook and a certificate.

KS3 online work experience portal: Engine evolved into a thorough and extensive introduction to civil engineering and by dividing the course into small and snappy sections, it ensures that students are able to remain engaged and finish the course. Engine is also designed and built so students can take part as an individual, or be led by teachers in a classroom environment. We are also working with AJP to help get Engine into schools around the UK with a marketing campaign.
Engine also teaches about transferable skills for any workplace such as teamwork, time management, working with outside agencies, good communication, personal responsibility, self-reflection, and professionalism.
