Overview >

Music festival website design: The Cavern Club’s International Beatleweek Festival (IBW) celebrates the music of the most famous pop group the world has ever known, The Beatles. In the city where it all began, Liverpool.

Live music is the focus of International Beatleweek. Not only does the festival have live music on the Cavern’s three stages all day, every day (with a different band on every hour), but it also goes out into the city and beyond to various venues.

The project brief >

This project came about by accident after we had been discussing redeveloping the main Cavern Club website. An old website for IBW was in existence but it was a little long in the tooth, and the ticketing system was becoming redundant. A new website was discussed requiring a fresh image to attract a younger audience while retaining fans who come year after year, and a more flexible ticketing solution was needed that would allow for ticket holders to have tickets scanned at venues.

The challenges >

The main challenge was the ticketing system. The Cavern have some set ticket packages as well as allowing fans to buy tickets for single events. In addition, packages can be bundles with accommodation in a choice of six different hotels in the city. Creating a flexible backend system where The Cavern Club can build their packages as well as simple frontend functionality for fans to buy tickets for different events took a fair bit of planning. In addition, a design that was a nod to the 1960s was required.

After planning and many many flowcharts we developed a flexible backend ticketing system that allowed The Cavern to build ticket packages and set prices, and list individual events. Building packages essentially consists of dragging and dropping events into a package, and attaching associated hotels.

Customers buying tickets are taken through a process of selecting a package and opting for accommodation or not. These are added to a cart where other single events can be added before checkout. Customers then receive a conformation email with their tickets containing a QR code which are scanned when they arrive at venues. Once scanned, this is recorded on the website’s customer inventory.

The outcome >

Music Festival Website: The site was launched in full in November 2025. Package and ticket sales have been rapid since launch and the feedback from the guys at The Cavern is that it has streamlined admin considerably as the backend is as near to fully automated as possible. Locating information on the website is much improved for customers with an efficient checkout process.

Each year, tickets go on sale in November for the festival the following August. We have also developed a microsite which is live in September and October celebrating the previous festival, while the following year’s festival is being planned and information added to the website by the team at The Cavern ready for launch in November.
