Royal Court Liverpool

Theatre web design

Royal Court is a Liverpool theatre for Liverpool people. With pre-show dining and a range of drinks served before and after the show, a trip to The Court is night of great entertainment and is a mix of modern service standards in a traditional setting. The shows have a Liverpool theme with largely local cast and crew. Sets are built in the city, rehearsals take place here and 95% of all money spent by the theatre goes back into the local economy.

What was needed?
The project brief... Visit the website

The Royal Court had an existing website which was well-used by the theatre-going public. As is the nature with sites that are regularly updated, it was becoming a little messy, difficult to navigate, and increasingly awkward to update efficiently. A more up-to-date design was required and a solid navigation system to ensure all content could be found more easily. The website also needed to have a local community feel as the target demographic was local working people.

The website also needed to be integrated with TicketSolve to show listings on the website and enable people to buy tickets online.

What we considered
The Challenges... Visit the website

This website is for a theatre that is firmly focussed on the local community and ‘people’ and provides entertainment for a brilliant night out. This needed to be differentiated from more ‘artsy’ theatres who are not direct competitors as they cater for a different audience. Therefore, we needed to bring the design of the site up-to-date as well as making it accessible and engaging for the target audience without it being exclusive – we needed to successfully deliver the theatres values and ethos to the visitor.

The integration required successfully importing the show listings from an external site via a feed and seamlessly take theatre goers offsite to pay for their tickets.

Other challenges involved consolidating all the content from over forty pages of the old site into neat sections and creating page themes for different ‘zones’ of the new site.

What we did
Our Solution... Visit the website

We started with a complete audit of the existing site and decided what we were going to keep and what needed adding. We then created a content hierarchy and devised the website ‘zones’ – large sites need robust structure so people can find their way around.

We used the Royal Court’s brand guidelines doc to create a bright, bold and lively design, using colour to demarcate website sections, and clear page headers to aid navigation.

Three APIs were used to import show details from TicketSolve to show information in different ways and improve the ticket buying experience.
